The City of Thousand Oaks is located in southeastern part of Ventura County, California. The city is called “T.O.” by the local residence. The name of the city was derived from the numerous oak trees that bring elegance to the open area. In addition to the natural oak trees, Thousand Oaks is known for preserving and having a large amount of protected areas and lots of public parks.
The city is the most populated part of a regional area called the Conejo Valley, which includes Thousand Oaks, Westlake Village, Oak Park, Agoura Hills, and Newbury Park (another part of Thousand Oaks). This area is positioned in the northwestern part of the Greater Los Angeles Area with Thousand Oaks in the Center of the Conejo Valley. The Los Angeles County/Ventura County lines cross over at the western city limits of Westlake Village and the eastern limits of Thousand Oaks.
The city’s master plan was designed by the Janss Investment Company in the mid-1950s. The Janss Investment Company originally acquired 10,000 acres in the early 1900s. Then the Janss Family proceeds went to planning the creation of a “total community”. The plan included 2,000 single-family residences, 1,000 custom home lots, a 200-acre industrial park, a regional shopping center now The Oaks Mall, the Thousand Oaks Library, and various neighborhoods shopping centers.
Nowadays, real estate business in the city is quite luxurious, as proof, median home prices range around $673,000. In 2006, the city was designated as one of Money magazine’s Best Places to Live. Thousand Oaks is also one of the safest cities in the nation; it holds the rank of being the first or second safest large city in the United States in the annual survey. Since its incorporation in 1964, Thousand Oaks has contracted with the Ventura County Sheriff’s Department for law enforcement services and the Ventura County Fire Department for Fire Services.
The climate of the region features Dry-summer Subtropical zone climate or a mild, year-round Mediterranean climate, with warm, sunny, dry summers and cool, rainy winters. Vegetation is very common in a Mediterranean atmosphere like this. The region, to some extent has cooler temperatures than the nearby areas, gathered from the cool air of the ocean passes through several hills and mountains.
For local employment the City of Thousand Oak is home to a range of small businesses in electronics, aerospace, healthcare, telecommunications, financing and biotechnology. For instance, the Teledyne Scientific & Imaging, Skyworks Solutions, Baxter International, and Amgen have company head offices in the city that offers various high-tech jobs. In addition, there are also regional offices like Verizon, Bank of America, Volkswagen, General Motors, WellPoint, and Blue Cross.
Thousand Oaks Transit (T.O.T.) provides the means of transportation for public transport to served Thousand Oaks and other nearby communities in the form of shuttle and buses. The Los Angeles International Airport provides the commercial air travel to the regular commuters, while the Bob Hope Airport in Burbank serves as an option for domestic destinations. At present, Thousand Oaks is undergoing few renovations and development. U.S. Route 101 is being improved and State Route 23 is in the sort out of being expanded to a six-lane highway.
