Moorpark is a city in the northern part of the Ventura County in Southern California and lies in a valley created by the Arroyo Simi River. The city of Fillmore is found on the north of the city and Thousand Oaks on the south. On its east, you will find Simi Valley and Los Angeles, and on its west, there’s Santa Paula, Somis, Ventura, Camarillo, and Oxnard.

The origin of the name of the city has yet to be finalized. There are some that state Moorpark originated from the Moorpark apricot. These are trees that grew abundant to that place. Another speculation is that the name came from Admiral Lord Anson’s estate Moor Park in Hertfordshire where he introduced the apricot in 1688. There is one more theory about the origin of the name. It was when the Southern Pacific Railroad was surveying the local land in the 1800’s for its railway. It was stated that someone from the party yelled that its sloping hills looked like the Scottish Moors.

Much like all cities of the Ventura County, Moorpark is also said to have been inhabited by Chumash Indians first. But the land was given as a grant to Robert W. Pointdexter who was a secretary of the Simi Land Company at that time. He was the one who made the original town site in 1887, when the association was dispersed. Moorpark, however, was founded in 1900 and grew after the 1904 when a tunnel through the Santa Susana Mountains was completed. Twenty years later, Moorpark was incorporated as a city.

Moorpark has a median household income of $87,153. This is slightly higher than the whole of Ventura County which has $76,860. The current population is 37,086 with a density of 467.3 per square mile. Moorpark is said to be recognized for having the lowest number of serious crimes committed in the Ventura County and one of the safest cities in the United States.

Moorpark’s Economic Development and Redevelopment Office is designed to attract, retain, and grow the businesses in Moorpark. Some of the companies that have their headquarters in or near Moorpark are Kavlico, Countrywide, First Data/ Cardservice International, Pentair Pool Products, Laars / Waterpik, Aquaria, and SMTEK. This is then a guarantee of a greater employee satisfaction, stability and productivity.

Like most Ventura County cities, Moorpark contracts for law enforcement services with the Ventura County Sherriff’s department. There are also citizen volunteers that assist with citizen patrols, and provide fingerprinting services for special licensing. Moorpark is also contracted to the Ventura County Fire Protection District.

Moorpark currently has 5 transits (fixed bus route for general transportation), Paratransit (Americans with Disabilities Act transit for disabled people, Senior Dial a ride (transit for seniors ages 62+), VISTA East (intercity express bus that connects Moorpark with Moorpark College, Simi Valley, and Thousand Oaks), and the Metrolink (the Ventura County Line of the regional commuter rail service).

Moorpark has its own Unified School District and quite a number of schools from K-8. They also have Moorpark College which is a Ventura County Community College District Campus.
