The City of Camarillo is located in the eastern Oxnard Plain with the Santa Susana Mountains up to the north, Camarillo Hills to its northwest, Cornejo Valley to the east, and the Santa Monica Mountains to the south. It has a total area of 49.1 km2. It is included in the western half of the Oxnard-Thousand Oaks-Ventura Metro Area near the other cities of Oxnard, Ventura (San Buenaventura), Port Hueneme, Fillmore, Thousand Oaks, Ojai, Simi Valley, and Santa Paula.
The city is named after Adolfo and Juan Camarillo. They are two of the California natives with Spanish ancestry who fought to keep the city’s legacy even after the coming of the Anglo settlers. It is said that Camarillo was once called Rancho Calleguas and was given to a man named Jose Pedro Ruiz by a certain Governor Alvarado in 1847. Juan Camarillo then obtained the Rancho from Ruiz and his son Adolfo took over when he died in 1880. Camarillo is renowned to be one of the cities that resisted urban sprawl. In 1964, Camarillo became a city and was developed into a beautiful environment. In the early 1960’s, most home buyers were military veterans who have been stationed in the area.
Camarillo’s economy is said to be stable and going well these days. From $245,000 in the year 2000, the median house value went up to $580,900. There are even reports that Camarillo is still holding a winning hand even with the state recession, as the Camarillo Premium Outlets are doing “uncommonly” well despite the situation. The city ranks #2 on the list of “Top 101 cities with largest percentage of females in occupations” and #6 on the list of “Top 101 cities with the largest percentage of males in occupations”. It also ranks #25 in the list of “Top 100 safest cities”. Camarillo ranks #4 in population among the 10 Ventura County cities, but 10 of the top 50 public companies in the country can be found here. The population of the city is said to be 63,324 since July of 2008.
There is quite a long list of small businesses in the city which ranges from accounting to administration to agriculture to apparel to auto sales to brokers to real estate to pest control to basically anything you can think of. Some of the most known businesses one can find here would be Burberry, Levi’s, The North Face, Saks Fifth Ave, Wells Fargo, Bank of America, JP Morgan Chase Bank, and a lot more.
The City of Camarillo has a government budget of $10,926,000 for police protection. And the law enforcement services for the city have been provided by the Ventura County Sherriff’s department since 1964. Camarillo City is being handled by the Ventura County Fire Protection District. Transportation in Camarillo can be divided into three bus services namely Fixed Route, Dial-A-Ride and Vista Service handled by the CAT or the Camarillo Area Transit. Dial a Ride is basically like a taxi or cab service which will take you anywhere in Camarillo. One can take advantage of these rides for any reasons, but they have a rule that one failure to cancel will take out a person’s eligibility from making advance reservations. These dial-a-ride vehicles are all equipped with wheel chairs for the elderly and handicapped.
The Camarillo City has 14 schools for grades K-8 and two highschools serviced by the Pleasant Valley School District, Mesa Union School District, Somis Union School District, and Oxnard Union High School District. There are quite a number of city services available in Camarillo. There is the City Clerk, Community Development, Finance Department, Public Works, Fire and Police Department, and a General Services department which provides program developments in Information systems, facilities management, and fleet maintenance.
Camarillo has over 300 days of sunshine per year. The average warmest month would be August, and the coolest one would be December. An average daily high temperature would be 80 degrees, and the daily low would be 40 degrees Fahrenheit.
