The City of Agoura Hills is located in the eastern part of Conejo Valley, between the Simi Valley hills and the Santa Monica Mountains. Chumash Native Americans were the first people to settle the area for hundreds of years. It was until late 1700s that the Spanish Franciscan missionaries settled the Alta California (Upper California) and the El Camino Real, also known as the Royal Road or King’s Highway, (a road from Loreto, Mexico, Baja California to Sonoma California) which connected the Spanish missions in California was established in the town that would be later known as Agoura Hills.

The city was referred to as the Vejar Junction when it was nothing but a stagecoach stop. In about 1800, Miguel Ortega was granted a land called Rancho Las Virgenes or El Rancho de Nuestra Señora La Reina de Las Virgenes. But it was abandoned upon his death in 1810 and the rancho was given to Maria Jose Dominguez as a Mexican land grant in 1834. The rancho was then purchased by Maria Antonia Machado de Reyes in 1845. In 1928, a group of residents created a Chamber of Commerce and asked for a permanent post office to be established in the community. The Postal Department told them that they need to submit a list of 10 possible names for the town. The townspeople listed Agoure in the tenth spot. The name was selected because it was the shortest. The name Agoure came from the early French landowner, Pierre Agoure. However, there is a notion that the change in spelling (Agoura) was a mere error by the post office.

Hillrise, Lake Lindero and Liberty Canyon, the first housing tracts, were built.
